Net Worth & Wealth

I earn ₹30 lakh a year. So why don't I feel wealthy?

A big salary is not the same as wealth. Here's where the gap usually hides.

₹30 lakh a year sounds like a great salary. So why does it sometimes feel like there's barely enough money left at the end of the month?

Because earning well and building wealth are two very different things.

Your salary tells you how much money comes in. Your net worth tells you how much you've actually accumulated after accounting for what you owe.

Where does all that income go?

As income increases, expenses often grow alongside it.

A bigger home, a car upgrade, higher EMIs, frequent travel or simply a more expensive lifestyle can absorb a surprising amount of money.

It's possible to earn ₹30 lakh a year and still have relatively little saved or invested.

Five things worth checking

  1. Savings: How much of your take-home salary do you actually keep?
  2. Debt: How much of your income goes towards EMIs and interest?
  3. Investments: Are you consistently building assets?
  4. Liquidity: Do you have money you can access when you need it?
  5. Net worth growth: Are you wealthier today than you were a year ago?

You don't necessarily need to cut every expense or give up things you enjoy.

The goal is to understand whether your income is helping you build long-term financial security.

The takeaway: A high salary gives you the opportunity to become wealthy. What you save, invest and accumulate determines whether that opportunity turns into actual wealth.
