I invest every month. But am I actually building wealth?

Monthly SIPs don't prove you're growing. Two net worth snapshots do.

Your SIPs go through every month. You invest whenever you have extra money. You're doing everything that seems financially responsible.

But how do you know whether it's actually making you wealthier?

Investing regularly is a great habit. Tracking your net worth helps you understand whether that habit is improving your overall financial position.

Look beyond how much you invest

Imagine you invest ₹30,000 every month.

That's ₹3.6 lakh invested over a year.

But during the same period, your investments might gain or lose value. You may also repay loans, withdraw money or purchase other assets.

Looking only at your monthly investments won't show the complete picture.

Track how your net worth changes

Start by calculating:

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

Compare your net worth today with where it stood six months or a year ago.

Then look at what's driving the change.

  • Are your investments growing?
  • Are your outstanding loans reducing?
  • Are you accumulating more assets?
  • Are major expenses or withdrawals affecting your savings?
  • Have market movements changed the value of your portfolio?

Remember that a temporary market decline doesn't necessarily mean your long-term financial strategy isn't working.

The takeaway: Investing tells you how much money you're putting to work. Tracking net worth helps you see how your overall wealth is changing.
