Could UPI payments start costing you soon?

Right now, paying via UPI is free for everyone — you, the merchant, all of it. A new Bill in Parliament could change that for merchants at larger shops and businesses.

The Bill would let the government decide which merchants pay a small transaction fee — called MDR (basically a small cut charged to the shop for accepting digital payments) — while keeping UPI free for consumers directly. But if a kirana owner or a restaurant gets charged per transaction, some may quietly raise prices or nudge you toward cash to avoid the fee.

What you can do

The way you pay every day could quietly shift over the next 6–12 months — but you're already ahead just by knowing this. 🌱
