Your free UPI payments may not stay free

Every time you pay at a kirana store or on Swiggy via UPI, that transaction costs the merchant nothing — and you nothing. But the government is now weighing whether to change that.
The Finance Ministry told a parliamentary panel it's considering two options: charging merchants a small fee on larger UPI transactions, or a tiered system where government incentives to payment companies gradually phase out.
If merchants start paying fees, many — especially small shops — may pass that cost to you as a surcharge or nudge you back to cash.
