Planning a sabbatical or career break? Your EPF account won't stop earning interest. But if 3 years pass with no fresh contribution, the account turns 'inactive' — and the interest it earns after that becomes taxable at your income slab.
Say you have ₹5 lakh in your EPF earning 8.25% a year. That's ₹41,250 in annual interest — normally tax-free, but taxable once your account goes inactive for 3 years.
At a 20% tax slab, that's roughly ₹8,250 extra tax, just for pausing contributions too long.
Your retirement money is still working for you — just make sure the taxman doesn't quietly take a cut.
